Key Stage 3

Students have two lessons of Mathematics a week. In Year 7, students have an extra 35 minute lesson which focuses on using ICT within a mathematical scenario. The aim of the course is to:

  • develop fluency with number and algebra
  • reason mathematically extending their understanding of mathematical proof 
  • develop their mathematical knowledge, in part through solving problems and evaluating the outcomes, including multi-step problems
  • develop their use of formal mathematical knowledge to interpret and solve problems, including in financial mathematics
  • begin to model situations mathematically and express the results using a range of formal mathematical representations
  • select appropriate concepts, methods and techniques to apply to unfamiliar and non-routine problems

Key Stage 4

Students follow the Higher Tier GCSE Edexcel Mathematics linear course and are streamed for the course. Students develop the ability to:

  • acquire and use problem-solving strategies
  • select and apply mathematical techniques and methods in mathematical, every day and real-world situations
  • reason mathematically, make deductions and inferences and draw conclusions
  • interpret and communicate mathematical information in a variety of forms appropriate to the information and context.

Key Stage 5

Students follow the OCR Mathematics specification. Both Mathematics and Further Mathematics courses are offered by the school. We aim to:

  • develop their understanding of mathematics and mathematical processes in a way that promotes confidence and fosters enjoyment
  • develop abilities to reason logically, to generalise and to construct mathematical proofs
  • extend their range of mathematical skills and techniques and use them in more difficult, unstructured problems
  • take responsibility for their own learning and the evaluation of their own mathematical development.

Curriculum activities and trips

All students in Years 7 to 11 participate in the UKMT Mathematics Challenge competition. Students are also encouraged to think about Maths beyond the syllabus by attending talks and lectures on a series of different topics. In the past this has included: coding and the Enigma Machine, Maths in Action conference, BP Trading Game. Students have also attended the Big Bang Fair which is a national event celebrating science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
