Extra-Curricular

The Extra-Curricular Programme

The Extra-Curricular Programme at The Henrietta Barnett School is exceptional. There are well over 50 clubs and societies, many of which are student-led and open to students from Years 7-13. We believe that taking part in extra-curricular clubs is a key part of a student’s education, as this helps to develop skills of leadership and teamwork, as well as confidence and commitment. It provides the opportunity to try out new experiences and learn new skills. Going to clubs is also a brilliant way of making new friends and having fun. One of the unique aspects of the school is its warm and friendly community; many students join clubs and make friends from all of the different year groups.

We also feel it is important for students to go beyond their comfort zones and to develop new skills and find new interests and hobbies. Doing so in the school environment means that the students gain in confidence and leave school with a strong sense of adventure and ambition. There are many different types of clubs and societies at HBS.

Sport

Sport is key at HBS. There are many clubs, including netball, basketball, volleyball, football, Park Run, badminton, cricket, multi-gym and Tang Soo Do (a Korean Martial Art). Clubs are available for those who wish to participate in fixtures with other schools or who prefer to play and develop their skills as a means of taking exercise and improving fitness – or both! If you would like to learn more about Sports clubs at HBS please contact the Head of PE, Ms Jessica Rodwell ([email protected])

Music

Music lies at the heart of HBS. Many students start a first or second instrument when they arrive at the school, or come here already knowing how to play. We offer a wide range of music lessons, including singing, violin, viola, ‘cello, piano, clarinet, flute, bassoon, percussion, trumpet, trombone, French horn, singing and many more. If a student would like to learn an instrument not on this list, we will find a teacher for them! There are many choirs, orchestras and ensembles, all of whom rehearse every week. There is a Jazz Band, a Rock School and there are many other groups who rehearse and perform together. There are several concerts each term. It is always a pleasure to see students from all of the different year groups performing together. If you would like to learn more about Music at HBS, please contact the Director of Music, Mr Simon Ferris ([email protected])

Drama

Drama is extremely popular at HBS. We offer LAMDA classes and qualifications, and there is at least one major Drama production every year, which in recent times have included musicals such as The Sound of Music and plays such as A Christmas Carol. This year the school play is The Tempest. There are several clubs, such as Musical Theatre Club and Key Stage 3 Drama Club, and there are many other opportunities to take part in Drama activities throughout the school. To find out more about Drama at HBS, please contact The Director of Drama, Miss Abigail Whitfield ([email protected])

Public Speaking and Debating

At HBS, we believe that it is essential that students are given as many opportunities as possible to develop their skills of public speaking and debating. We take part in the Jack Petchey Speak Out challenge, there is a Debating Club and our Sixth Formers take part in the annual Bar Mock Trial Competition. Students also take part in external debating competitions and Model United Nations events. If you would like to learn more about Public Speaking and Debating at HBS, please contact Mr David Southall, Public Speaking, Debating and MUN Co-ordinator ([email protected])

Academic Enrichment

There are many academic clubs and societies at HBS. The aim of these to extend students’ knowledge, understanding and enjoyment of their academic studies. Some of them also focus on university courses and careers beyond school, and are of particular interest to students who wish to apply for these courses at university. These are run by staff and students, and often include sessions from eminent external speakers who are experts in their field. These include History Society, Economics Society, Politics Society, French Debating, Spanish Extension, MedSoc, Law Society, Biomedical Society, Robotics Club, Geography Society, Advanced Coding Club, Maths Challenge, Classics Society, Latin Reading Club, Mythology Club, French Translating, History Book Club and many more.

Clubs and Special Interest Groups

There are also many other clubs for those who share an interest or a hobby. These include Chess Club, Gardening Club, the Green Team, the LGBTQ Society, Tamil Society and Jewish Society. Students are encouraged to form their own clubs or society. Please download or view a copy of our Autumn Term Extra-curricular timetable below.
