Parents' Association 'In the Footsteps of Henrietta Barnett' and Summer Party

Parents' Association

On Saturday 28th April, a group of over 20 curious parents, friends of HBS and one intrepid student, joined Rachel Kolsky for a guided tour of Hampstead Garden Suburb. Braving the cold and rain for over two hours, Rachel walked the group through the quiet idyllic streets, explaining the architecture and lay-out of the houses, the streets and the public areas and buildings. With insight, energy and humour, she explored with the group not only the beautiful presentation of the suburb, but revealed the social context at the time the Suburb was established as well as the vision, motivations and determination of Dame Henrietta Barnett to make it happen. Dame Henrietta’s ambition was “to house all classes in attractive surroundings at the Hampstead Garden Suburb” while also saving the greenery and open spaces of an area being rapidly made accessible to central London as the train and Underground networks were expanded. To turn vision into reality, Dame Henrietta mobilised – and frequently coerced! – many influential personalities and financiers of the era, and a few of Britain’s greatest architects of the twentieth century like Edwin Lutyens and the firm Unmin and Park, as well as local residents. As time passed, the reality of Hampstead Garden Suburb being “a place for all classes” was lost, with many houses now selling for seven-figure sums. However, perhaps more than any other part of Dame Henrietta’s vision remains alive in Henrietta Barnett School for Girls which occupies the Institute and other nearby buildings: bright motivated girls of any economic, religious or cultural background study and grow up together, as classmates and friends, forging an integrated and inclusive future for themselves and Britain in the 21st century.
