SITE DEVELOPMENT

HBS Main Building - Spring

GREAT NEWS……………………….

On 22nd September 2008, after 17 proposals spanning 45 years, representing nearly half the life of the school, HBS was granted planning permission for works to include:

  • Internal refurbishment of the Queen Mary Wing – to be completed by September 2009. This work was completed on time. HBS pupils and staff returned from the summer break and immediately started using the eight new labs.
  • Removal of the “temporary” huts, which are over 20 years old

  • Building a new wing on the corner of Central Square and Northway, to house our Music and Drama School – to be completed by September 2010

  • Building a new wing on the corner of Central Square and Southway, to house our Art and Design & Technology School – to be completed by September 2010.

The works will include moving the tennis courts to the Northway side of the site, locating them side by side, rather than end to end.

This will allow the levelling and terracing of the land between the Main Building and Bigwood, which is currently subject to subsidence and is gradually slipping down the hill.

HOW WILL THE SCHOOL AND THE PUPILS BENEFIT?

There is no doubt that our pupils are bright and that they and their teachers work very hard.

However, because they are intelligent and are achievers does not mean that they are not entitled to the best facilities that we can offer, given the limitations of the site.

Our wonderful 100-year old Grade 11* Listed Lutyens building in the centre of the Hampstead Garden Suburb conservation area also deserves our attention.

SCIENCE

“As both the husband and father of “old girls” of HBS and as a scientist, I welcome the school’s plans to improve and increase the science facilities. The pupils of today are the scientists, researchers and doctors of tomorrow and for generations to come.  Whenever I visit the school I am impressed by the girls’ enthusiasm and dedication to the sciences.  They deserve the very best facilities and I hope you will give your full support to the building programme.”

Lord (Professor Robert) Winston

  • Until September 2009, Physics, chemistry and biology were taught in 6 inadequate labs, last redecorated over 40 years ago, and with insufficient preparation and storage space.
  • Some pupils only have access to labs for their lessons on alternate weeks.
  • The internal works have provided 8 new fully equipped labs and ancillary services over three floors, with one floor dedicated to each discipline.

MUSIC AND DRAMA

HBS - Drama Production

HBS - Music Performance

“My daughter had seven very happy and fulfilling years at HBS and I am a huge fan of the school. At every concert and drama production I was always struck by the spirit and enthusiasm of the girls and staff, which transcended the less than ideal facilities. The new Music and Drama School will mean that all that wonderful energy and creativity inherent in all our children can be properly housed and supported.  Performing, or taking part in any joint creative endeavour can really boost pupils’ confidence and sense of self, which will help them whatever they choose to do in life.”

Victoria Wood, CBE, comedian, writer and mother of Old Girl

HBS has Specialist School Status in Music and English.  We firmly believe that presentation skills and the confidence they bring are an important asset to develop. We also work hard to produce rounded individuals, who appreciate the arts as well as academia, and develop life-long hobbies and interests.

  • Music is currently taught in 11 different venues across three buildings, including in the bathroom and kitchen of the caretaker’s former house
  • Instruments are currently stored at the furthest point from the performance area
  • The new Music and Drama School will bring performance art together in one building, close to the Main Hall
  • It will provide specialised teaching space, dedicated rehearsal space, storage space and an additional performance area
  • It will enhance all aspects of teaching these subjects and facilitate joint productions
  •

ART AND DESIGN & TECHNOLOGY

HBS - A Level DT Project

HBS - A Level Art Project

Art is currently taught in three studios on two floors in the Bigwood building.

Design & Technology is taught on the opposite side of the site, in a first floor class room and in two small ground floor “temporary” huts on the opposite side of the main building.

  • D&T will have its own purpose built ground floor teaching space and workshops
  • The department will be able to expand its sphere of work and will have easy access for delivery of materials and for use of our computer-controlled laser cutter.
  • The Art Department will be adjacent to D&T in the new building, allowing joint projects such as textile design

SPORT

HBS - Indoor Rowing Competition

Our tennis courts are currently end-to-end. This means it is virtually impossible for a teacher to be watching two matches at once.

  • The tennis courts will be side-by-side which, as well as facilitating supervision of two matches simultaneously, will allow us to use them as one larger space for other sports
  • The green space in the centre of the site will also be used as two volleyball courts
  • The levelling of the land will allow natural light into the gym

ALL OTHER SUBJECTS

Virtually every subject taught at HBS will benefit, over the next couple of years, from the internal and external works.

The additional space created will enable us to locate complementary subjects close together and will give each subject a Department Office.

The staff will have adequate storage space for their paperwork, and the pupils will know where to find staff members when they need to see them.

EXHIBITION OF ARCHITECTS’ DRAWINGS

We are hosting a small display of architects’ drawings and photos of the new build in the bar area of our Hall.

The two new low, complementary wings will replace the “temporary” huts on the corners of Northway and Southway.  The roof will have the same pitch or slope as the main building.

Those who would like to see the drawings are invited to phone Jo Velleman’s Direct Line 0208 209 9730 to make an appointment which, of course, will need to take into account our school day and our open days and exams timetable.

The exhibition is also available without appointment to anyone attending evening events at The Henrietta Barnett School Hall.

ARCHITECTS, CONTRACTORS AND BUILDING SCHEDULE

We have been fortunate to have the services of Hopkins Architects www.hopkins.co.uk for this project. They have extensive experience both of additions to listed buildings and of schools building works.

Our contractors, Osborne, have considerable experience of this type of work and are sensitive to the special requirements that this project involves. They will be providing a regular newsletter for the school and local residents.

They have asked us to mention the following points:

  • The external works will commence on 14th September 2009 and are due to finish by 31st August 2010.
  • Deliveries and work will not commence before 8.00am and will finish by 4.00pm on weekdays.
  • There will be no work taking place on Bank Holidays.
  • They hope that they will not have to work on Saturdays. However, they may need to work on some Saturdays for operational reasons between 8.00am and 1.00pm.
  • This contingency arrangement is provided for in the planning permission which was granted on 22nd September 2008.
  • So far as possible, the route for builders and deliveries will be along Bigwood Road and up Southway, to avoid the narrower Northway, which is also a bus route.  However, there may be occasions when the use of Northway is unavoidable.

If you have any queries or concerns, please contact Jo Velleman, Direct Line 0208 209 9730, Email This e-mail address is being protected from spam bots, you need JavaScript enabled to view it rather than approach the contractors or builders direct.

Osborne have an EMERGENCY OUT OF HOURS number to report any problems, which is 07527 470038.

This is an emergency builders’ number only and the person answering the phone will be unable to answer any general enquiries about the building works or take messages about anything else concerning the school.

WHERE IS THE MONEY COMING FROM?

The total cost for the project is £7.75m. The DCFS is providing a grant of £6.75m which must be used by September 2010.

The Governing Body of the School, through its registered charity, The Henrietta Barnett School Trust (registered charity number 1071460) needs to raise £1m.

HOW CAN I HELP?

Each donation is valuable to us and there will be naming opportunities as well as the opportunity to make anonymous donations.
