We’re delighted to announce the return of the English Extension Lunchtime Club for the new academic year. This popular series of talks, which takes place every Thursday lunchtime, is back with an exciting new twist: all talks this year are being delivered by current HBS students.
Mr Graff received an overwhelming number of applications during the summer term from students keen to share their literary passions, and the quality of talks so far has certainly lived up to expectations.
The first talk of the term was given by Viva in Year 11 on the topic of The Romantic Poets: Their Work and Their Legacy. Her presentation showcased an impressive depth of knowledge and offered fresh insights into the poetry of the Romantic era. A highlight for many was the grisly (and unforgettable) story of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s calcified heart.
The second talk, Beauty and the Beast: Monsters in Literature and What They Reveal About Society, was delivered by Nina and Sowmya in Year 10. Their thought-provoking exploration of monstrous figures in literature examined how authors use these characters to reflect social fears, values, and prejudices.
Both talks drew large and enthusiastic audiences, and set a high standard for the rest of the term.
With a full schedule of student speakers lined up, English Extension promises another fantastic year of literary exploration and discussion. All students are warmly encouraged to attend.
