Year 7 Inter-House Poetry Competition 2025

Following on from the National Poetry Day event on October 6, the whole of Year 7 participated in the English Department’s annual Inter-house Poetry Competition. Each point group had prepared a dramatic reading of a poem selected by their English teacher, and two students from each group also read out a poem they had composed themselves. Mr Haigh led the event, which was judged by Ms Watts, and Mahnoor and Roxie from the Year 12 Prefect Team.

The presentations were ambitious and impressive, often incorporating drama, costuming, and music. Students had thought hard about how to convey the meaning and emotions behind their poem, and rehearsed their piece carefully. The individual poems were also original and often emotional, with several students taking inspiration from the poem they were presenting as a class.

In the end, Ms Watts and the prefects selected 7M’s performance of Island Man by Grace Nicholas as the best group performance, and chose 7R’s Hrida and Medaswi as the best individual poetry performances. Another great event in the English calendar – well done to all Year 7s for getting involved with such enthusiasm.
