Safety in Water

The Metropolitan Police are circulating this very important water safety message as we approach the holidays. They are keen to raise awareness of the dangers associated with entering open water to help prevent avoidable incidents and tragedies during the summer period. Students have received this message at school but we would also like to share with parents and carers.

  • In 2024 there were 597 water related fatalities in the UK
  • It is important to know the dangers of water (both the sea and inland waterways) – strong currents, submerged objects, vegetation, cold water shock, depth and unstable surfaces

If someone finds themselves in trouble in water they should use the acronym FLOAT:

F – Fight the instinct to panic or swim hard

L – Lean back in the water to keep their airway clear

O – Open their body up, extend their arms and legs, pushing their stomach up

A – Actions – gently move their hands and feet to stay afloat

T – Time – In 60-90 seconds they will be able to control their breathing

If someone witnesses someone else in trouble in water they should do the following:

  • Stop and Think – do not enter the water
  • Call for help – call 999
  • Tell the person in trouble to float on their back
  • Keep them in view and throw them something that floats
