The Healthcare Engineering Workshop at UCL

By Maggie Y, 8H

Recently, Year 8 students Maggie, Nysa, Vidya and Heli attended a hands-on healthcare engineering workshop at the Institute of Healthcare Engineering (IHE) in the University College of London (UCL).

The workshop was a great chance for us to get out of the regular classroom and discover new (albeit unexpected) interests. Although there were many students from other schools also attending the workshop, we worked with each other and communicated with them, representing HBS well outside normal school events.

Highlights from the Day:

    • Talks: I personally feel as though I learned a lot about healthcare engineering, and the talks we listened to seemed to have piqued everyone else’s interest too! We learnt about how robots can be used to advance healthcare and vaccine development, and about prosthetics.
    • Hands-On Practicals: We had a lot of fun experiments after the talks, including doing a pulse oximetry investigation and making a prosthetic hand using cardboard. We also stuck some electrodes on our arms and monitored our muscle movements (crazy how some people got their bar off the graph)!
    • Posters: We made posters at the end of the workshop to show how much we learned, and judging by how hard everyone around us was working to complete this task, I think it’s pretty safe to say that everyone enjoyed it!

It was a solid day well-spent on learning, further delving into unexplored scientific territories and showcasing our skills in a new environment with unfamiliar faces. Thank you to Miss Fusi for introducing us to this amazing opportunity, we loved it, and we hope there’s another opportunity to attend workshops like this again!
