This term, our library has been buzzing with energy and enthusiasm as we welcomed back our local partnership primary school’s Year 5 students for 4 sessions of ‘Book Banter’; a four-week literacy programme led by our dedicated student volunteers. This partnership aimed to bridge the gap between primary and secondary school and enhance our local community by giving everyone an opportunity to share their passion for reading and creativity.
The journey began with Louis Sachar’s Holes, where students “dug” into character motives and got hands-on by designing their own creative “holes.” The students then travelled back in time to explore the medieval wit of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales, followed by a deep dive into the emotive historical world of Jamila Gavin’s Coram Boy. To conclude the programme, students were given “free choice,” allowing them to celebrate their own personal favourite books through presentations.
A huge thank you must go to our student volunteers. Their leadership, patience, and enthusiasm made every session a success. We were incredibly impressed by the imagination of the younger students and look forward to seeing these young readers in our corridors again soon.
