Mr Sadiq, Ms Gorlej and Dr Amon accompanied 53 keen Year 12 Chemistry students as they enjoyed an immersive day of presentations, given by academics at the cutting edge of scientific research. The venue was the picturesque 1920’s Emanuelle Centre in Westminster, London and students were treated to five talks around 40 minutes long. Students were able to interact via online polls and short Q&A sessions.
The speakers not only spoke about the multi-disciplinary approach required but also gave valuable insight into their own academic journeys and the key decisions they made along the way. It turns out there is no single ‘correct’ path to follow but our young adults were advised to choose the areas that interest them and they would enjoy doing on a daily basis.
The subject matter of the talks was wide-ranging, thought-provoking and very applicable to the modern-day. This included: ‘Learning Biochemistry from Bacteria’, ‘The wide-ranging applications of Quantum devices’, ‘The powerful roles of metals in Medicine’, ‘How Nuclear Science can change the world’ and ‘The existential threat of anti-microbial resistance’.
The students were a credit to the school and were a pleasure to supervise. We even managed to secure front-row seats, by being the first school to arrive at the venue! All-in-all, it was a riveting and thoroughly worthwhile day for our Year 12 Chemists.
