On Monday 2 March, HBS hosted its annual Shakespeare performances by the Globe Players theatre group. Year 8 were up first and were treated to a performance of Macbeth, which they have just finished studying in English. The performers didn’t just deliver the story, but also paused to comment on key quotations and significant themes – as an English teacher it was gratifying to watch students nodding along with the analysis and even finishing quotes for the actors.
Then it was Year 7’s turn, who saw ‘What You Will’ – an introduction to Shakespeare’s life and work through performances of key scenes from the Comedies, Histories, and Tragedies. This was a light-hearted but informative guide to the Bard’s works, involving lots of laughs and some audience participation (with our very own Mr Peterson as the love-struck Duke Orsino from Twelfth Night). Hopefully our students can channel some of this spirit into the upcoming school production of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Thanks to the Globe Players and to all the staff who supported with the smooth running of this event.
