Teaching bright, able, enthusiastic students at one of the most successful state schools in the country is a challenging, but very rewarding experience. Attracting the best teachers is our aim in making any new appointment and we commit considerable time and thought to the selection process.

Why teach at HBS?

Thank you for your interest in the School. Teaching in a selective girls’ school may be something you have not considered before and so we thought it may be useful to give you an overview of the kind of school we are.

HBS is a warm, friendly and vibrant community that prides itself on good relationships and it is very important to us that anyone who joins the staff shares and contributes to this ethos. New staff are readily welcomed and assimilated into this community.

We are fortunate to be located in the unique setting of Hampstead Garden Suburb, a quiet, picturesque area with a ‘rural’ feel, only a few miles from Central London. The school has recently undergone a massive New Build and refurbishment programme which has involved the re-construction to a high specification of eight Science labs, two new state-of-the-art buildings to house Music, Drama, Art and Design Technology and the provision of dedicated offices and newly decorated and furnished suites of rooms for all subjects.

We are looking for well-qualified, dynamic teachers who are committed to developing the whole person and to promoting curiosity of learning, independence of mind and a love of learning. The enjoyment of learning is fundamental to the success of our school and the happiness of our students. We encourage our teachers to use innovative teaching and learning methods to keep students focused and motivated. Lessons are interactive and carefully planned, with a commitment to high standards of academic achievement. We pay much attention to our students’ individual learning styles and they are greatly encouraged to take responsibility for their own learning, with many opportunities for independent research and to extend their learning through extra-curricular provision.

Our students are from a wide range of ethnic and social backgrounds and are taken from a large catchment area. Our teachers reflect this diversity in that many have joined the school from comprehensives, some from the independent sector and some having taken up teaching as a second career after working in other professions.

Previous experience is not as important as a passion for your subject and an ability to pass this on to the students. If this sounds like the kind of environment in which you would thrive, then we would very much like to hear from you.
